Rombobox strategies
Tips to read the board faster, avoid the X traps and choose the game mode that suits you best in each game.
Reading the board
1. Take stock before you move
Before your first step, find five things: where you are, where the goal is, where each color pair is, where each X is, and which neutral squares work as corridors. With that map in your head, the route often appears on its own.
2. Think in jumps, not squares
Each color pair is a shortcut: step on one and you appear on the other without spending a step. Optimal routes almost always use jumps to cross the board. Ask yourself: "where does this jump leave me, and what's close from there?"
3. An X only hurts if its color is already lit
Stepping on the X of a color that is still off changes nothing. Early in the game, X squares can be passing squares like any other. The danger comes after you light their color.
4. Choose the order of the colors wisely
Light first the colors whose X is far from your path, and leave for last the color whose X is near the goal or your route. That way you don't risk turning off a color you had already lit.
5. Lit pairs keep teleporting you
Stepping on a color square that is already lit sends you to its partner again. It can be a useful shortcut or a trap that takes you away from the goal. Keep it in mind when planning your last steps.
6. The goal is not a wall
If you pass over the black square before you have all four colors, nothing happens. If it saves you a detour, use it like any other square.
7. Decide the whole route, then execute it
Momentum only gives you 1.5 seconds between steps, so there's no time to think halfway. Plan the complete route during your thinking time and then move with rhythm, without hesitating.
8. Aim for the optimum, but know you have some margin
The maximum allowed is the optimum + 2, so a small mistake won't make you lose. Still, the optimum gives the best rewards: a double time bonus and the biggest Momentum reward.
With blackouts (from a streak of 5)
9. Memorize before stepping on a neutral square
From a streak of 5, any neutral square may be a blackout. Use your thinking time to memorize the whole route, not just the start. If your path goes through a neutral square, make sure you know by heart everything that comes after it.
10. Avoid neutral squares if you can… or leave them for the end
A route that never touches a neutral square never goes dark. If you have to cross one, try to do it in the last steps, when there's little left to remember.
Playing without seeing
11. Map first, then the goal
Start each game with N to hear the map and M to find out where the goal is. That's enough to picture the route before you touch an arrow.
12. Simulate the whole route
The simulation doesn't count real steps: use it to walk the whole path until you hear “goal, done”. It tells you how many steps your route takes; if it's over the maximum, look for another one before pressing Space.
13. Repeat the route quietly
Before pressing Space, recite it as a list of directions: “right, right, down…”. With 4.5 s of Momentum you have room, but every check with Space, N or M uses up time between steps.
14. Listen to your steps
Stereo tells you the column and pitch tells you the row. If a step sounds somewhere you didn't expect, check with Space before going on. After a blackout, that sound is all you have left: practise it in easy games.
15. Raise the voice speed little by little
The faster the voice, the more time you have left to think. Raise the speed in Preferences as you get used to the notation.
16. Train your ear before playing
Five minutes of 🎧 Train your ear a day pays off quickly. Once you recognize the instruments, the sound map (S) gives you the board in half the time of the spoken one, and every step tells you what you stepped on without asking.
Which mode to choose
The moment of your first step decides the mode (the guide explains it). Each one has its moment:
| Mode | Use it when… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ⚡ Lightning | The board is clear at first glance. | You have almost all your time left, so the bonus is huge, and you also earn Momentum for the next game. |
| 🎯 Middle | You need to think a bit, but not all the way. | You earn permanent Momentum game after game: over time you'll have more and more margin between steps. |
| 🧠 Think | The board is hard and you can't see the route. | Waiting until the last 3 s doesn't cost you time for the next game, and what's left still adds to the bonus. |
Manage your time in the long run
- Save up on easy games. If you start early and nail the optimum, the double bonus leaves you plenty of thinking time for the next one, in case you get a hard board.
- Don't under-think for no reason. If you start halfway through your time and finish at optimum + 2, next game you'll only have what you used.
- Accumulated Momentum is your insurance. Wins in Middle mode keep raising it, and it stays until you lose.
Protect your streak
Your streak is your score: games won in a row. If you miss only Momentum or only the steps, you don't lose it: don't give up halfway and reach the goal. Reloading the page, leaving mid-game or starting a new game counts as abandoning and resets it to 0. If a board looks impossible, take a breath and use your time: every board has a solution.
